MEDLIFE Mobile Clinic - 2012

MEDLIFE is an organization that supports low-income communities towards achieving healthier lifestyles. MEDLIFE works with partners in these communities to improve access to medicine, education, and resources for community development that are necessary to create sustainable change. One way that MEDLIFE supports the well-being of these low-income communities is by bringing mobile clinics to urban slums, where quality basic health care services may be accessed. In the summer of 2012, I volunteered to participate in a mobile clinic that would occur in the slums of Lima, Peru.

The poverty and overall lack of resources that I witnessed was beyond surreal. Despite the adversity being faced, it was beautiful to see a community unite towards a common goal. Physicians offered their services for free, people offered up their homes to be used for mobile clinics, and community members made sure to spread the news by word of mouth that there would be a mobile clinic in the area soon. I was very humbled by this experience, and realized how much I took accessibility of health care for granted.
