Grass-Roots Onsite Work Internship - 2015

This experience was by far the most dynamic for me as an undergraduate student. Through the GLOBEMED chapter at Florida International University, I was presented with the opportunity to work as an intern with the chapter's partner organization. GLOBEMED's focus is addressing health disparities and working with partners towards diminishing global health inequity. FIU's partner is Escuela de la calle, a school in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala that makes education accessible to low-income families in the area. During the internship, we evaluated the progress of the school and the clinic, while also taking photos and videos to create a documentary. We also organized women's empowerment activities for the students at the school, that turned out to be a great success. This experience opened my eyes to the importance of feminism and empowerment of women to the well-being of individuals in society. It also made me aware of the difficulties of creating a sustainable project and how essential team work in progressing towards achieving global health equity.
